Just wondering if anyone has had this happen to them before something like the tranny exploding or timing belt shooting through the hood:
98 Elantra 1.8L autocrapic 70k - 45-85 MPH - Smooth sailing... every once in awhile I'll feel a very quick loss of power "bump," like something in the tranny slipped for a quick sec, then all is normal. No other real problems. Any ideas? Thanks!
Check the AT fluid to see if it's dark, if it is have it changed. How long has it been since you have the ATF changed out?:hmmm:

Id t3h level right bro? And did you have the ATF filter changed too? When the fluid was changed, what was the colour of it? It sounds like the drive and driven plates are slipping at intervals.
Do you drive the car VERY hard?

The filter wansn't changed this time around. I had the tranny flushed and filter changed before a drive from Kentucky to Arizona. I also put in a small B&M tranny cooler on account of the 800lb of gear I packed in the car! That was about six+ months ago.
When changed, the color was pretty dark and smelled like crap. I do drive it pretty hard. I'm kind of illiterate in the tranny field... is this a possible clutch plate type issue?
EDIT: Upon search, discovered: Manual->Clutch plate Auto->Torque converter
Right? Now I feel newbie! I guess that would be Level Ten that makes performance torque converters.
I would like replace what I can myself (no more warranty). Just depends on the difficulty level. I have a full set of tools and four years of Army bs as a mechanic. Thinking I may go turbo when Alpine gets their CA smogged kit ready to roll.
Tanny fluid dark and smells like crap, 800lbs of gear!? Dude check the other parts of the car like the plugs, fuel filter and the air filter again, because it sounds like you're gonna need a transmission overhaul. From your description of the tranny fluid your drive and driven plates within the transmission have bee worn beyond the service limit(due to the huge load you were hauling, 800lbs is like carting more weight than Yokozuna!)and this perticular repair means downtime and serious dolla being dropped!
Good luck man, hope I'm wrong on this one.

Besides driving hard, I baby the engine. All oil changes and I'm now using synthetic. Changed fuel filter couple months ago and flushed cooling system. I'll cross my fingers!

I'm going to snoop through my Haynes manual and see what's involved in opening the tranny. One heck of a project I imagine. I would just like to see what the internals look like. Maybe it would give me an idea about what's wrong. I'm all about saving money and having a good time learning about my car.
