Alright...I went back home today, and the first thing I did was uncover my 98 Accent to take it for a spin. After being out for a few minutes, and traveling at high speeds on the freeway, I noticed that it wasn't behaving as usuall. I rested my right hand on the automatic shifter, and all of a sudden, the car started reving and jolting. It seemed to be going back and forth in between gears. IT stopped as soon as I took my hand off of the shifter, but ti still seemed a bit funny. It didn't advance to the next gear after flooring it a few times, either. I was thinking a few things about this problem. One, it could be due to the cold. I was a dumb ass and took it for a car wash to get salt off when it was like 5 degrees. I was thinking something could have froze and snapped in the area where my gear selector meets the tranny, causing the behavior when I rested my hand on it. Second, I was thinking it could need new tranny fluid. I also thought that maybe it just needed to warm up more after not being used for a while. I turned it off later on, and tried it again, and it seemed to act a bit better. This really has me worried, and if anyone can suggest anything, it is greatly appreciated. I'm pretty poor, so if the damn thing is just going, I won't be able to buy a new tranny for quite some time...although that 5 speed does sound soooooo good. Oh yeah, by the way, I only have this problem when the overdrive is off, which led me to believe that it could just be something with that. Thanks!

You only have this problem with the OD off? Do you still have a warranty on your car? When you said rested your hand on the shifter I am thinking you could of nuged it up into nuetral? You don't even have to do a full click. I have had several experencies where for some odd reason when you nuged the shifter just a bit it would shift into nuetral..but then from the vibrations of the road and car it rattles the shifter, thus shifting back into drive. That is a possibility but not a real definate answer. Also how long has it been since you've had your fluid changed along with your filter. Clogged filters and not so well lubercation play a big roll in how the car shifts and how smooth it drives also. That is really all of the stupid ideas i could think of:ermm:

No, I didn't nudge it into nuetral. If I did that going 65mph on the freeway, I would definitely know about it. No, it just seems like it's something with the OD. It works fine without it on, but once it's on, it has the problems. The other night, I was coming back from my GF's house, and I was sitting at a gas station. I tried turning the OD off, but the light didn't come on and it got stuck. I tapped the shifter a bit, it went off, and the "OD off" light came on. So, I think it has to be a problem with the selector and the overdrive, possibly electrical. I might just need some new wires down in there. But, yeah, it's also time for new fluid. Thanks for the reply and any other posts to come.

I suspect the transmission range switch, or pulse generator assy could be bad. A computer dx can tell you this.
Okay, i was working fine when I left on my weekly road trip on Friday. Yesterday, it acted up, and now, I have NO overdrive. I hope that driving without it over long distances doesn't hurt the tranny, cause I had to drive all the way back accross Wisconsin without it :P Is there anyway to fix this myself or repair it without having to take it in? Being able to save some cash would be nice. I just want my OD back so it isn't constantly at 4000 rpm when I'm driving on the freeway. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Hmmm...the transmission range switch. I thought that it might be this. I remember when i first had problems with it a week or two ago, I had just gotten a car wash. The inside of the engine bay got soaked, and most of it froze. Could freezing up cause it to go bad? It got a little better when it warmed up, but as soon as I took it back out onto the fridged Northern Wisconsin highways, it started acting up again. It got soaked the other day when I was driving through slop, and I think that's maybe what caused it to stop working all together. If it is this, can it be easily replaced? Again, thanks for the help.

Okay, I was thinking about trying to fix this myself, any ideas? I'll have some time over spring break, assuming my tranny survives tha long without overdrive on the freeway, although I think it should be able to handle it. I'm just wondering what it could be, and if I should try. I would take it in to the dealership, but I don't wanna get screwed over. For those parts...like how much are we talking and what kind of difficulty to install? Thanks for the help.

I would take it to the dealer to have this done, along with the dx on the computer. Since the computer runs the transmission/engine, it will tell you whats going on.
I had a faulty range switch, pulse generator and a reed switch, which were replaced under warranty when I first bought my car. I could reset the computer by turning off the car, waiting 8 seconds and restarting it.
I also recommend not driving it on the freeway in 3rd gear. This might overheat the transmission.
You think the cost would be pretty bad? I bought it used with no warranty, so I'd be paying for it. The fact that it's my tranny scares the hell out of me...:depressed:
