Default Drilling a Hole in the Muffler

Yeah I Know it's common that
Many Car's I See on the road and It's obvious that a car with the noise of a loud fart can coming from a stock exhaust can only mean such a dumb idea,

Some People I Talked to say that drilling a hole in the muffler reduce's backpressure and give's it a nice sound,

I'm not sure if anyone here cut's a hole in thier muffler's but
my question is
is this a good idea?

or is it just plain stupid and Ricey>?

In the U.K. at least, this would mean an automatic emissions-test failure (& right, it`s as ricey as hell!).

Why not just replace the muffler with something that doesn't look like a coffee can?

If you want to be a bit creative: there are muscle car guys and hot rodders that put a bypass into their exhaust before the resonator and muffler. When the want some extra power, they open the bypass, but it is loud as hell.

Its actually a great idea, just drill a couple big holes in the muffler and throw an APC sticker across the front window

On a naturally aspirated small displacement engine, an exhaust dump is a bad idea. It might work ok if the car was turboed but you would lose power if the car is n/a.

Drilling holes is not a good idea at all and if anything, I would think it would disrupt a smooth flow and you would lose power before gaining anything.

In order for an exhaust to be the most effective, 2 things come in play. Volume and speed. You need to be able to move the maximum amount of air in the quickest amount of time.

Basically, this means that if the exhaust is too small, it may flow faster but it won't move enough volume. BUT at the same time, if it is too big, it will move more volume but it will not move it fast enough. Other things that slow it down are excessive bends and other things like splitting it (duals). I would also imagine holes drilled in the pipe or muffler would disrupt a smooth flow and create a degree of turbulance.

Not to mention, drilling holes is a great way to shorten the life of your muffler as it will be more prone to rusting.

It doesn't work on turbo's either... My pipe broke on my Subaru and the car lost quite a bit of power until I fixed it...

Yeah, but this would also matter how far down the break in the piping was. This also plays a huge role in determining power loss/restriction gain from no piping and how far back the piping goes before the dump occures.
