i have a manual transmission accent, however i notice that sometimes when one of my buddies is reversing in an automatic tranny car, and shift to drive while they're still backing up, it causes their car to kinda do a herky jerky motion and then it kicks into gear and gets going.

i dont know if this helps, but if you reverse and shift into drive, you might wanna wait until the car stops before putting it into drive.

Most automatic transmissions have a slight delay when going into drive and reverse. Quite normal. However if you have to wait more than 2 seconds, it is too long. My 68 Chev truck with the commercial tranny has a slight delay when going into gear. Even the 53 Buick Special I have also has a delay.

On most Hyundai's, the shift range switch and the inhibitor switch (both are for the gear selection on the shifter) can cause a delay when going into gear, as well as other erratic shifting problems.
