Lately, (I've filled up at about 3 different gas stations and this has always happened) every time that I go to fill my tank up with gas, I'll put the nozzle in, and start pumping, and it will click and stop (just like it does when your tank is full). The problem is, it does this when I know it's not full. Like, as soon as I start pumping gas, this happens. I have tried barelly holding the gas thing to let in barelly any gas, and it still clicks off. It takes me like 5 minutes to get 10 dollers worth of gas in my car because of this, not to mention I can never even get a full tank of gas anymore because I'm worried about it overflowing. I havn't touched the fuel tank, the fuel cap, or anything else related to the fuel except the pump that I changed out and that was over a year ago and it has only recently started doing this.
Why the heck is it doing this and what can I do to stop it? I live in IL, it's been kinda cold, but we've had colder winters where this hasn't happened before. This has happened when my tank has been from 1/4 full to almost on E.
I have to find the source of this problem.
Thanks.
Edit:
Oh, and if it matters, this is 87 octane fuel. I don't think it does, but yeah...I also have tried shaking the nozzle too.
Normally, the nozzle shuts off when there is an increase in air pressure, caused by gas starting to fill the fill tube. So, it's possible your vent hose (from the fill tube to the charcoal cannister) is plugged or pinched. This would cause the air pressure in the tube to rise before the tank is full. Try removing the vent tube from the fill tube and see what happens. If that fixes the problem, you know either the vent hose is plugged or the canister is bad.

I went to get gas the other night. I put the nozzle in all the way and pushed the handle in to start the flow of gas. Seconds later gas exploded from my tank all over the place. I know I was near E on this, and that there was no way that it overflowed from being to full. After I cleaned the mess up, I filled slowely all the way to $15 worth of gas in there.
If I were to un-attach this tube from the canister and drive to get gas, would it be safe to do this? If this solves my problem, what can I do for a temp fix, I'm really low on cash.
hmmmm.....Where is this part located and exactly what does it do? I don't know why it would have gone bad.
I've tried searching the internet trying to figured out more info on this part, but I havn't found to much relating to cars. I can't find mention of it on Hmaservice either.
Your canister close valve and filter may be plugged, if you look under the driver side rear bumper there is a vapour canister, the small valve and filter allow the air to flo out of the tank and caome back down the filler neck if it is cloged it will not allow fuel to go down the neck. i will snap a pick tomorrow.
