Main Pulley vibrating 1/8 in. up,down, left, and right.
And of course its leaking oil there as well. I know that I have to change the oil seal there, but is there anything else that i should know. Is this worth fixing? What causes this to happen?
Re: Main Pulley vibrating 1/8 in. up,down, left, and right.
That does sound like the front main bearing and seal. Every second you run that engine you'll be running up your repair bill. If you haven't screwed it up too bad yet it may be repairable by simply replacing the bearings and seals. Usually (but not always) you lose oil pressure when the mains go though, so if you're sitting there watching it for too long or worse driving it it may need extensive machine work to run properly again and maybe a few new rotating components. As is your engine probably won't run much longer so it's not the kind of problem to just ignore. It will probably be more cost effective to fix this engine than get a new one as long as it was still running well when you turned it off. If it was running poorly there's no way to tell without tearing the engine apart.
Just to verify, can you wiggle the pulley by hand that much, and can you see the shaft wiggling with it?
This happens simply because of wear on the main bearings. Excessive wear can be caused by not changing the oil on time, excessively mistreating your engine, hot rodding the car without it being warmed up, or a slightly warped crankshaft among other things. If you've got less than 200,000 miles on your engine I would say it would qualify as premature failure, but that's only my opinion.
Re: Main Pulley vibrating 1/8 in. up,down, left, and right.
Thanks guys, for the promt reply.
It is making noise, and in that area of the engine. One can see everytime the pulley shifts out of alignment that it makes noise. However, It isn't consistant. So, I don't think the crank is not bent, but what do I know. Thats why I am asking the experts. I will take it apart, but when I do, what am I looking for? Any tips.
Re: Main Pulley vibrating 1/8 in. up,down, left, and right.
Yeah, sounds like at least one main bearing to me. Look for major physical damage like cracked main bearing caps, broken bolts, etc. and then inspect the main bearings themselves. You will probably be able to guess pretty well whether the damage looks too bad to fix or not based on a visual inspection. If you're unsure either post pictures of any damage or take it to an engine rebuilder and ask his opinion, which is infinitely more valuable than mine.
Assuming damage looks minimal, you'll probably have to take the block in to a machine shop to see if they can measure and if necessary align bore your block and fit the appropriate oversized bearings. This should not be that expensive providing you pull the engine yourself and take it to them. If their quote is too high ask what prep you can do to lower the cost and do whatever amount of the work you're comfortable with.
Re: Main Pulley vibrating 1/8 in. up,down, left, and right.
If its a 2.0 then the thrust washer is out of the crank. Whick allows the crank to move in and out.. Grab the crank pulley and see if you can move the crank in and out by hand... If you can then its the washer.... and short block time....
Re: Main Pulley vibrating 1/8 in. up,down, left, and right.
I doubt it because its wobbling all over. The mains in the beta are really sensitive to oil levels. Run it for any length of time it seems and they are toast. As far as replacing them and the thrust bearings it can be done in the drive way with hand tools if you are ballzy. There is no way to get the proper torque doing it like that. Search here and elantraxd.com to hear more about replacing them. He also said nothing about hard clutch engaugement during hard cornering (left hand turn) and hasn't had any starting issues (Crank pos. sensor out of range from the crankwalk) So I really doubt its just a crankwalk/thurst washer issues.
