Default changed tranny fluid finally...now...

hey boys and girls,

97 X3 GT, manual, changed the tranny fliud (had been well over 150,000 km's) and that went well, but now in third fourth and fifth there is an od "grind" sound coming from the drivers side that was there before, but was quieter from what I remember. We did put in just over 2.15 liters (the reccomended amount of fluid) 75W/90 and seemed all good. Shifts in and out of gear without issue but could this sound be the TOB or the clutch plate? Almost sounds like metal on metal but I am not 100%. First and second sound and drive just fine for a car with 222,000 km's with the origonal Clutch and Tranny. I am thinking I should just replace the clutch due to it's 10 year old-ness. What would the cost be for a clutch (CDN funds of course). My buddy said 3-400, does that sound bout right?

Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to help.

Yea that sounds about right for a new clutch may be able to find one a little cheaper if you looked around. I would check your tranny fluid level on the stick it may be a little high. When you nflushed you may not have got all the fluid out but then you added all fluid in so you may have a little too much. I have seen some strange thing with tranny fluid levels being wrong. If it was clutch I would think it would be in all grears but it still could be you should probably look into replacing that anyway since you have so many miles on it.

I dont have a stick to check the fluid, that is what sucks. I would let a bit of it out but I dont want to be UNDER the fluid levels becuase I am pretty sure you can run into more problems with less. Also, it is not loud all the time. It is worse when I get off the highway.

Oh well, I will just monitor it and replace when necessary I guess. If anyone has anymore thoughts, I would love to hear them.

Tks.

Are you using GL-4? GL-5 will fuck your tranny up. GL-5 is NOT backwards compatible!

100% certain it was 4. I made sure I triple checked that to make sure it was all correct.
