Default Lantra 2000

I've got a 1.6 hyundai lantra (Irish) and its burning oil. I did about 1,000 miles and it burnt about a ltr.

Its not a leak as I got it checked. My mechanic told me the engine would need a total over hawl to find the problem. Does anybody have any advice.

The problem is from the valve seals. Change them and you'll be ok. My dad has the same problem.

I've heard the Hyundais have poor quality piston rings, i.e. don't fit too well, or are soft and easily worn or something. This would mean oil is getting past the rings and getting burnt in the combustion chamber, BEFORE it's got to the valve stem seals (by which time it's burnt into gas anyway). A mechanic friend who works on a lot of different makes and models says it's not even a question of age, some brand new engines can burn a lot of oil due to their manufacture.

Mine occasionally does the same, advice was to fit them with new standard steel rings, and do other fitting/shaping work as required in the cylinder well. I would think you would be less likely to have valve stem seal problems, due to their hard-wearing nature these days? Anyhow, most mechanics seem to like to say they need to open it up and take a look to be sure, and yes, it's usually pretty expensive, just for the labour. I think you can get some 'pistons in a can' product as an engine oil additive that reduces oil burning by (temporarily) chemically sealing around the rings.
