Default Need help - How to properly & safely clean engine bay

Hello,

I did some searching and before I go and actually go ahead with this, I just wanted to confirm the following steps:

PREPARATION STEPS:
- Warm up the engine
- Turn off engine
- Cover all electrical plugs with plastic (MAF, O2 sensor, battery, ign wires)
- Cover alternator
- Cover spark plugs

CLEANING STEPS:
- Spray engine degreaser onto surfaces, avoiding electrical parts
- Let sit for 15-30 mins
- Rinse off with water
- Wipe dry wet surfaces

Now my concerns are:
- I am using GUNK Engine Brite gel
- which items in particular should I stay away from cleaning/spraying?
- when spraying, which is best? (fine, stream, mist etc)

Am I missing any important points?

Thanks [D]

Yout stepss are pretty good. When you rinse use a light spray from the hose. A full on blast will get into your electronics. With the water it is easy and light.

Or you can skip all that and use a steam cleaner like I do. That hot steam gets all that dirt and oil gunk off.

When using such degreasers, mind any custom painted surfaces. They may discolour.

I use the foam degreaser on the engine, and some orange blast cleaner to get the engine bay.
