Sticky: ASK TO RETAIN ALL OLD PARTS WHEN SERVICING ANYTHING
Pretty self-explanatory. The shop is legally bound to show you the old parts they removed. Be cautious, as some will show you a different part. If you're not walking in with your own part, ask to see the new part and then keep the old part. Get this in writing before they perform ANY service.
Recently, a lot of my friends have gotten jipped like this, and the shops throw the old parts away (or not even change them)

Make this a sticky, possibly in the newbie forum too. Another one of my buddies just got ****ed over for an alternator (quoted new part, put in used one)

Great advice. I'm not sure about the "legally bound" part. Not saying you're wrong Jed, but if people plan on using this, educate yourselves before hand.

i think it's a good idea. some mechanics are so busy and inexperienced that while they can do a very good job, they may forget your new air filter sitting near their toolbox.

The next time you talk to your boss with a booger hanging from your nose, or leave the house with your fly open, think of it this way: At least you didn't just get outrun by a 13-year-old Hyundai sedan with drum brakes. - Billy Rubio -much respect man- "4g63 x2"
Most service department work orders have a box where you can put an x or check or sign if you would like old parts to be kept. If you do not fill in the spot and then sign the work order the shop has no responsiblity for theold parts and what happens to them after. It is a good thing to have them put the old one in the box I agree one hundred percent.

Yea in the state of california you have to retain all old parts untill the vehicle is delivered to the custormer. This is why i have a huge collection of crap that i have at the shop that ill get around to throwing away someday.
