Default Help with PS squeal - 2001 Elantra

Ok boys and girls now I am going crazy and can use some help. First, I have a 2001 elantra with ~ 85,000 miles. As runtine maint, I had the timing belt and all the other belts (and water pump) replaced. Not long after I found the higher pressure line from the PS pump to the R&P control was leaking. Replaced the line but the PS pump kept squealing. It would squeal (most of the time) when the car was first started and usually would stop with a few revs of the engine. So I figured the belt was loose. Checked it and it seemd tight but did a tighten anyway. Did not fix the squeal. So now I figure its the pump (at this point, yes I checked the fluid level and it was good cold and while running). I replace the pump and you guessed it, the squeal is still their. So in an act of desperation I through on a new belt. No fixa da noise. I drained the PS fluid and went to a lower viscosity fluid and that no fixa da noise either. A friend is now telling me that the rack and pinion need to be changed. I think that is going to be a few more bones then I want to put into the car right now.

Has anyone else had any problems like this? What was your fix? If not does anyone have any ideas???

It really hurts pulling all yoiur hair out. Help, Help, Help

Change BOTH your lines. You may have one thats clogged. Also check your PS steering cooler lines. You have a cooler that runs to the front of the radiator and just circles back. One more thing... flush your system.

To flush....
Disconnect a low pressure line and run it into a bucket.
Disconnect all your spark plugs, remeber where they go.
Turn engine over to spin pump, and turn wheel slightly.
Keep adding clean fluid to pump, DO NOT LET IT RUN DRY
Keep flushing it out untill all the ugly gross fluid is out.

Probally should buy a new pump then.

After that... i would grease your steering gear, and check your tie rods for binding. If that dosent fix it, then yeah... new rack.

Either way good luck then. I know what your going through. I just had to deal with the same thing on a freinds truck.

Thanks for the info. I had already replaced the pump and the lins were flushed. I actually caved because I have no time right now to mess with it so I am running it over to a local (well trusted)shop to get it right. Will let you know what the final say was just as an FYI

It was the STP PS fluid. I know it was thinner then the no name brand. However we found the the alternator belt was loose. They share a pully and if both belts are supper tight you get music

I won't be surpriced if the STP PS fluid (clear or brown) don't work.
