Default Manual Transmission is difficult to get in Reverse

Hello all,

First to tell you a little about my car. I bought a 2004 Tiburon with a In-line 4 CVVT DOHC. It's a 5 Spd. I have no problems getting it into any gears except reverse. It's a hit or miss. Sometimes it will go into reverse, then sometimes it won't. I find it a little easier to smack the shifter to the right and then pull it into reverse that way. However I shouldn't have to do this, am I correct in assume this?

I don't want to take it to the dealership unless I know for a fact that they will do something. Sometimes it can take me up to 2 mins to get it into reverse. This is also not my first manual, So I do have prior expierence with manuals.

Any info will be helpful.

I've always had a little trouble, and what I do is just put the shifter back to neutral, let off the clutch, push the clutch back in, then try again. It always goes the second time for me. Hopefully that works for you.

I Agree with 187! Even in my past 2 manual cars reverese has a mind of its own sometimes.

The pony will do this sometimes too (the 5spd one moreso than the 4spd) To correct it, I put it in 1st, move a tiny bit, then try R again. Liz's tiburon is terrible for it, but im sure that has to do with her short shifter.

I've always put it in 3rd, back to neutral, and then in reverse. This car will be hard sometimes, but not very often. My old subaru was terrible with getting it in reverse.

Normal for Hyundai's.

Dealer will check it out, then charge you and not change a thing.

I would have to assume that the way reverse is geared (small and for torque) makes it difficult to match up sometimes as this is experienced in many cars, just as it is harder to switch gears flawlessly in lower gears than it is in higher gears. I wouldn't think it's something to worry about. Maybe I'm wrong?

i think every car as a special way of getting it into reverse, i've founs 187s way works well in my accent. on my old escort, i would run it through all the gears and then into reverse, play around with and you'll hit on something i'm sure
