Default Diagnostic tool/code reader -How to?

Guys,
I have a check engine light in my recently acquired 2000' sonata (v6)
and it has thrown a check engine light. I just brought the car!!

Anyway, since Autozone is quite far away from where I am at. The local Advanced auto lets you use their Code scan tool to check your codes.
I am wondering what the exact procedure is to read the codes?
How do i go about hooking it up? where do I hook it up etc.

Your help is appreciated.
thanks,

step one:turn on car
step two:find obd plug, normally under your dash on the left side
step three: plug it in
step four:turn on unit if not self powered
step five:hit the scan button, or whichever it is on your unit
step six:write down the codes.
step seven:drink beer

thanks krazymikey,
I'll try and do that. Hopefully I'll find out what the error code is.
I am bummed out that I've already gotten the error code within 3 days of owning the car.

Normally I wouldn't have worried. But I am yet to have the car pass emissions. I was planning on having it done this week so I am very concerned as to what is causing the CEL.

accentguru, thank you for the info.

I passed the emissions. So far the CEL hasn't come back(been 70 miles).
However I just noticed that I only got about 240m per 3/4 tank(aint that rather low?).
Based on what I've read I am guessing the maf needs replaced(my guess only)
Is the air flow sensor same as MAF sensor? The squar'ish box before the air fiter. If both are the same do I buy that thing and remove the part and hook up the new part? is is that simple or any other steps involved?
any one here replaced maf sensor?
thanks,

Oh! I aoplogize for not reporting the code i got. It was P0100 MAF VAF circuit malfunction. After I removed the code reader the CEL went away, so far it hasn't reappeared(been 70 miles). Am crossing my fingers.
However I noticed that I have registered only 240 miles on 3/4 tank. I have no idea what mileage these cars give but I am surprised that my eclipse GT gives me better mileage. Only difference is that Sonata takes the cheapest gas.

Also what is a lucas?. I shall have the oil changed this week. Hopefully the problem is history.

Lucas is an oil additive. It is good stuff.

Again, in my old accent I had a bad 02 sensor and that caused my cel and poor gas mileage! Find out for sure what needs to be replaced before you invest too much money and time!
