Default Help with carburated car...

it's a 79 camaro. I think the fuel pump is down. Am I supposed to hear the pump turn on when I put the key in the on position like my Accent? Never messed with a carburated car before so any help would be great.

Should, i think they had electric pumps too. If its not whinning its death song like all GM pumps, then might want to check the fuel pump relay, and fuses. Also, remove the fuel line from the car, point it out of the vehicle, and turn key. If fuel comes out, then you have fuel.

That should have a mechanical fuel pump unless it's been retrofitted, so no there should be no noise.

It's dead simple to test though. Pull the fuel line and crank her over. It will spray a bunch of fuel if it's working. If nothing or only a little comes out then it's got issues.

I also had a lot of problems on my old GM with fuel filters. I had to replace them about once every 3 months. They're only like $5 though, so no biggie.

I miss my old 78 Blazer. 475hp built 327 from a '67 Vette.

I should note that he has ran out of fuel 3 times recently, once about 2 months ago and twice in the last week. So, anyone know were the fuel line is on the carburator?

It should have a good sized rubber hose leading to it possibly to the front of the carb. I think one of teh filters is screwed into the carb. (Assuming it's a Rochester QuadraJet)

Your fuel line will be a 3/8" or so black rubber tube that could come into the carb about anywhere but should be the only tube fitting that description. Not to be confused with the vacuum tubes. It may be easier to identify the fuel filter which is probably within a foot and a half of the carb or on the firewall or fenderwell. it will be a can more than likely, either metal or clearish/whitish plastic about 2-1/2 inches long and 1-1/2 inches in diameter.

If it's still factory then the carb will have a steel line from the fuel pump to the carb. No rubber. It's located on the front of the carb. You will need a 5/8 wrench and a 1" wrench. The 5/8 for the line and 1" to hold the fuel filter housing. The fuel filter is located in front of the carb where the fuel line comes into it. Don't loose the plastic o-ring off of the fuel filter housing if you take the fuel filter out. And only way to check the fuel filter if it's plugged is to cut it open. You will need an new one anyways. Make sure you put the new fuel filter back in correctly. Other wise it will act like a plugged filter.
