Default Clutch Installation

2002 Elantra GT

I removed the old clutch and pressure plate. I installed the new clutch and pressure plate while using the alignment tool. The transmission will not go back in. At some point the throw out bearig snapped into the pressure plate and will not come out no matter what I do. I have been bench pressing this transmission for over 4 hours. Does anyone have any advice for me?

you going to need some help. Someone is going to have to turn the forks as the trans stabs to get them behind the TOB. Ive heard with the right snap ring pliars you can get the TOB off the PP. Did you try turning the input shaft a little?

I hit every parts shop in town and tried over 10 different kinds of snap ring pliers. There is no way to get the TOB off the PP without destroying one or the other. I borrowed a transmission jack from a friend and used a bungee cord on the TOB forks so that they would engage. It took about 2 hours of wiggling the damn thing but it went in. What a pain in the ***. Some time tomorow I will reassembe the rest of the parts and take it for a test drive. This is one of those XTD clutch kits from ebay. It is branded the same as my old one, but it has their logo stamped over it. Lame, but still cheaper than the dealer. It better last more than 41k miles; the factory clutch is junk. Wish me luck.

the PP is stock. ryan (beta swap guy) had a clutch rebuilder look over the PP. The only "mod" they did was spray paint it.

that really sucks too becaue this PP was suipposed to have 60% grater holding power. Well like I said it was cheaper than stock so I guess it's not a total loss.

and yes it is possible to get the TOB off. i just put a new clutch in thursday and i reused my old XTD that i had rebuilt. the clutch shop told me they had no idea how to get the TOB off. but all i did was used a needle nose pliars with a curved tip and pried the snap ring open. then i used a big socket and hammer on the backside and pounded it out. you have to just get lucky cuz i tried with the PP i took out for about 15 minutes and couldn't get it out.

I tried the exact same idea on my old PP to test on. There is a middle ring made out of graphite and when I hit the socket to knock out the TOB it totally smashed that inner ring so I didn't try it on my new PP. Like you said though you just need to get a lucky shot I guess.
