temp gauge pegged above HOT

So im driving last night look down and the guage is pegged above the hot, all the way up. I freaked out and pulled over but had no signs of overheating, in fact she was relatively cool. What the heck happened to the gauge. I unplugged the coolant temp sending unit and it still pegged.... lame.

Short in your gauge maybe. Do a voltage test on the lead to the tempsensor maybe thats it. Eh.. my fuel gague did that. Still havent put a new one in there...

The temp gauge sender is grounded (fused shut) or the signal wire is contacting ground somewhere between the gauge and the sender.

That happened in my 87 pony (one of them anyways) with the fuel AND temp gauges. Never fixed it, I just ignored the gas gauge and put in a mechanical temp sensor.
