did you line up the timing marks on the crank pulley and the sprocket? are you getting compression? that is a pretty broad question you're asking but I would check the cam timing because if you're too far off then you will have at least 8 bent valves....

the timing marks didnt line up exactly the same, but it was close enough. the first time i tried starting it, i think there was no compression. it would start but was struggling really bad to get air (thats what it sounded like). if i didnt give it gas it shut off. so i moved the sprocket on the chain. after that the car wouldnt start. i tried moving the sprocket a few more times in different directions around the first position i had. it just wont start.

if it started then you were getting compression.if I were you right now I would set the cam timing correctly. don't move it around and try and guess, get the timing right. if it still doesn't start after that then do a compression test. a compression tester is like 10 dollars or borrow one. if the timing is on and you still don't have compression then you fvked yourself.

Check the cam positioning sensor, on the edge of the exhaust part of the head. It's needed to start, without it (at least on my 6000LE) you cannot start the car because it does not know when to fire.

If you need one I can send you one cheap.

You may have fusked your valves...
My friend did this to his R31 skyline...

He mis-aligned the cam sprocket and his car started but then it died and wouldnt re-start...

Also did you play around with your lifters?
If they are hydraulic did you remember to squeeze the oil that was in there out before re-inserting them other wise they would now be solids...

You generally only get one shot at doing the timing right, if its wrong and you try and start the car the cars timing will be out and you will break something...

Cheers

how would i go about correcting the timing? i really am not too schooled on the finer points of an engine. thats why i tried getting help on here, but no one seemed to want to help untill now (after i fucked my car up already)

i just had the cam positioning sensor changed because i was leaking oil out of it.

i didnt touch the lifters. i dont know if their hydro or what.

everyone has said throughout the ages that this was a simple diy job. the installation was no problem. i have no idea whats going on. how do i make sure the timing is right? i think thats my biggest problem, the timing.

Default 1.8 timing

With your bottom cover and belt pulley removed.Check that the crank pulley mark is inline with the mark on the oil pump.
Check that your cam pulley(small hole) is inline with the red mark on the cylinder head.
On the timing chain, there are 2 either dark links or a small circles on 2 links. They need to be over the punch marks in the sprockets at the end of your cams.
If you removed the cam shafts while changing the chain, you must compress the hydraulic lift ers or the valves stay slightly open and the car wont start right away.If this is the case and all your marks are correct.Tow the car ,it will start.
I have my own Hyundai Workshop.in South Africa.Cape town

so theres no way i can fix this myself in the parking lot of an appartment complex? this is something im going to have to either have towed or have a mechanic come look at?

i tried starting the car and it sounded like it wanted to start. i gave it gas a couple times and then i heard a loud "thud" from the engine.

That would probably be the gas igniting and going straight out the exhaust pipe...

When he said tow the car i think he meant pull/push it when its in gear...
This should let the lifters de-flate and the valves shold close properly...
Also make sure your battery is charged after all the unsucessful start attempts...

Timing not be screwed around with by the in-experianced (which is why i have stayed away from it)...
If it was easy to do everyone would do it...
You have to winde the engine down to top or bottom dead center and then you can work on it...
And make sure you line everything back up to the marks it was originally on or else you will have problems...

Cheers
