hyundai tech....waiting to find a good accent to swap.
Older model Elantras (and Tiburons) had to have their timing belt changed promptly at 55k miles or it would cause major problems. I would have yours done when the manual says to. Don't wait it out.
There are 2 types of engines when it comes to timing belts: Independent and Dependent. I think the Beta is a dependent type engine, in where if you don't have the belt changed, it would cause engine damage. On the opposite end, an independent engine wouldn't cause any damage if the belt snapped.
So get it checked out if you are near the time and mileage!

I've always heard the dependent motors referred to as interference motors.
Get the timing belt replaced! I saw what happens to the valves when it breaks... It's not pretty.

Yea, if it's an interference engine, then you're screwed if the belt breaks. I don't know if the Hyundai's are interference or not, but either way get that belt replaced soon. Better safe than sorry.
The Hyundais do have inteference engines and if the timing belt does break you are screwed. You will either have to rebuild or replace your current engine.
It is hard to say how long you can go. It is possible for the timing belt to break at any point or it could outlast the life of the car. I know it isn't cheap to have it replaced for you but do you really want to keep pushing it?

There is a replacement for displacement. It is on 2 wheels and 600cc.
Just an FYI.. the belt on my '97 Accent broke right at 100K mi. Bent up all sorts of stuff and had to have the engine replaced. I'd say replace it asap. Better to spend a few hundred getting it replaced than a thousand buying yourself a new engine.. I know i'll be changing the belt on my new Accent as soon as it hits 60K..
sound advice...there's a reason the service is called for at a particular interval.:
