a higher flow cat does flow better than stock.

without your cat you will most definitely not pass emmisions...haha...smog free just an hour north of you.

get a random technology cat, and you will not be dissappointed with the results.

don't know about the 2nd gen...I have a 1st gen.

Or...you could make a temporary cat. Take a cat and weld flanges onto it, and bolt it up on test day, and replace it with the straight pipe after you pass...or you could do lioke we did in CA and slip the smog tech a 50spot.

cmon fellas its not a cat.
Its a resonator that was somehow meant to look like a cat.
Many people have chopped off this part of their exhaust in curiosity and discovered this.
Besides, since this "cat" is after the 2nd 02 sensor, there is no way for OBDII to know that this "cat" is there or not, so naturally, don't replace it. I think you'd find if you put 2 cats on your new exhaust that you might actually run slower than original exhaust.

Nobody is talking about using two cats. They're saying they're going to remove both and install one high-flow cat instead.

Sorry to tell you steve, catalyst material in both of my cats, they were on a 2001. Also a resonator. Now I only have one and it is not a factory one either. I don't live in Cali, I live in Iowa where no one cares what you spew forth from your vehicle. One is close coupled, attached to the exhaust manifold, the other is down stream. It IS a cat, no doubt about that.

Now, back on topic, get a high flow cat and have it put on after the header. You will have to have the second oxygen sensor relocated behind the new cat anyways.

Steve, almost every Hyundai sold in the US has Cali emissions. Hyundai does this because of the way the cars are distributed. All Hyundais come into this country through Cali and are then routed from the staging lot in Cali to the dealers. Hyundai in Korea doesn't know where the cars are going when they send them. The cars don't get routed to their final destination until Hyundai Motors of America takes possession of them in Cali. This will, of course, change once Hyundai's begin rolling off the Alabama assembly line.
