Default Resetting Check Engine Lights.

Does anyone know how to do this without the OBDII software or taking your car to the Dealer. I threw my CEL before I had a chance to change misfiring wires and plugs. I have never had to do this before because it has always reset itself.
I did a search on the boards but didn't find anything.

unhook the negative to your battery and press down the brake pedal for a couple seconds to discharge any caps or whatnot in your cars electrical systems.... and let it sit for a 15-20 minutes
btw you could have used that little search option to find out the answer before posting and waiting for an answer

Why is it necessary to keep the battery disconnected for 15-20 min? When my check engine light came on, I disconnected the battery for 30 sec and it went out. It did come back on about a week later though, so I assumed there must be a real problem. Do you think it came back on because I didn't leave the battery disconnected long enough?

I did a search silly and didn't find anything.
I am not talking about resetting the ECU, I am talking about resetting the CEL.
Will simply unhooking the negative work for resetting the CEL too?
