What would be a better choice, KORE catback or a custom bent catback at a muffler shop. Here is what I would like a balance of:
HP increase
quiet
preferably no obnoxiously huge tip sticking out from under the bumper
(one of the drawbacks of the Kore catback)
I have an 02 auto elantra and any recomendations on mufflers or anything will be very helpful.
thanx
to my eyes, the KORE's muffler and the OBX's muffler has same look of it. 5Zigen STYLE which is the one most (i think) loud tip. i have OBX and they are identical to the KORE's but OBX has 2.5in diameter piping, so they will be louder than KORE. i wouldn't get KORE's Cat-back because they are high in price. they are good quality, but i do not have enough money for them. :ermm:

i have the kore system on my accent. i could feel a bit of a power increase. and its not incredibly loud. but it does stick out quite a bit.

There is a lot more to what makes a muffler sound the way it does then just looks. What they pack it with and how well they pack it makes more of a difference in sound then the overall design of the muffler.

There is a replacement for displacement. It is on 2 wheels and 600cc.
After helping install RedShark's KORE Cat-back this weekend, I have to heartily recommend it. It requires NO welding or fabrication to fit, just simply unbolt the muffler section and B pipe, then replace it with the KORE system. It uses the stock hangers, and all you need is some jack stands, 17mm(?) sockets, and a few hours TOPS. KORE's is 2-3/8" in diameter for the beta's, 2.25 for the alpha's. With the silencer in, its pretty quiet, with the silencer out its not so quiet but it doesnt scream "HEY PULL ME OVER".
Oh, and $400 is not expensive for a complete polished stainless steel, bolt-in cat-back exhuast system. And its a Tanabe style muffler, not 5zigen, though the differences are few.

well i had my silencer in my OBX for a couple weeks and just took it out yesterday and I noticed like my car had a few extra HP... so i think it does take away some performance but not too much...
I'd recommend having an exhaust shop bend you one up.
Since your car has a small n/a engine I wouldn't recommend going larger than 1/4" over stock size. Maybe 3/8" if you really want to.
Having an exhaust that is too large will reduce too much back pressure. Which will kill off some of your torque. Plus reduce your fuel economy.
It will only be effective at WOT (wide open throttle) where the increased exhaust flow will create enough back pressure to make your engine run properly.
If you are going to be racing your car.....sure go ahead, but if you have it as a daily driver. I wouldn't recommend it.
If you have a shop bend it. Have it mandrel bent. This will create a smoother flow.
The muffler has a LOT to do with how your car will sound. If you use a 'strait thru' design (which is what the 'Kore' system looks like) you"ll lose torque, and get something of a chain saw sound (depending on muffler packing)......better at WOT though.
I'd suggest going to a performance/speed or whatever kind of shop, and picking out a muffler for yourself that does what you want it to do. Then go to a shop and have them bend you a system.
It will be quite a bit cheaper........depending on how much you spend on your muffler.
