Protecting headers from discoloration?

Hey peeps...
I don't think this has been covered yet, (even in the FXtreme forums). I'll be getting headers fairly soon. Knowing that ceramic coating is fairly expensive and not necessarly readily available, <b>has anyone used Thermowrap header wrap?</b> What I was thinking, for go - leave the wrap on. We all know the benefits of the stuff. For show - take it off. It would protect the outside of the headers from dirt, waterspots, fingerprints, ect. It should also produce a more constant temperature throughout the length of the header thus reducing color graduations...right? May be a little extra work, (figure around an hour to wrap or unwrap) but $35.00 sounds a lot better for protection (again, not to mention the benefits of maintaining temperature) than several hundred for ceramic coating. Any thoughts?

Most of the discoloration comes from oil from your hands when you put the header on. If nobody uses their bare hands to touch the header before it's shipped and while you install it, it'll turn a nice golden color after it heats up. The purple blotches that most people have on theirs are from where they touched it.

well unfortunately as much as I tried not to touch them and giving the installers gloves to use, which I know they prolly did at the beginning cause they're kewl with me, they still ended up COLORING UP, so I have the purplish looking headers now... so once they start rusting, like Brendan says that's when I will spend the flow to have the coated both in and out... last I found out it was close to 200 bux for the coating and I don't know about shipping back and forth... but I will get them done in BLUE.... wwwwwoooooohhhhhooooooo

P.S. about you thinking you can wrap and unwrap them I DON'T THINK SO, sorry, a bud of mine tried that, the first week it was fine, but after a month of running with the wrap when he tried to take it off, part were melted onto the headers... so that will look even uglier for shows, just leave them wrapped... <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

You can polish the headers up with stuff called Autosol - its in a tube, a bit like tooth paste, its a metal polish.

I use it regularly on my motorbike headers to keep them looking shiny and clean <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>
