Default Re: Notes on the XD cam from Professor Ko

Hi all, one thing i am amazed at is that people swap parts from one engine to another with big HP increase expectations. I am not an engine engineer, but i do know this as a fact: Engines are designed as one. All designs take into consideration another. That is why when mods are done to a stock engine, one must take into consideration the changes it will cause elsewhere in the engine.

For example: When turbo's are installed, people think that adding the turbo and supplying more fuel does the job! Well think again! Cam timing, cam stroke, compression ratio, cooling capacity, exhaust capacity, air/fuel ratio, mass air sensor vs turbo CFM, fuel pressure, fuel pump capacity, injector duration, timing, conecting rods etc...etc...etc....

You better plan your actions before making even the slightest change. I think that a good engine modifier will take into consideration all of these variables and modify the engine in a way that will prevent engine failure and save a lot of $$$$ in the end while yielding a lot of additional horsepower!!!

Thanks for reading....

Regards to all

Sean

Okay, so what exactly is the difference between and XD cam and a 1.8L cam? I'm looking for a little more midrange (if I don't go turbo because of $$), so which one will work better? I have a '99 Tib which I believe is the Beta I, right? I've been told (from SR) that the stock exhaust cam on the Beta I is the best available and only the intake needs to be swapped, if so desired. They used to sell the 1.8, but it's not listed on their site anymore. So, for a little better midrange which would work better, XD or 1.8? And where can I get an XD? Also, if the 1.8 would be better, could I just call the dealer and get one through them?

When I installed my XD cam I noticed a gain in 5000+ RPM range. If you are looking for mid range, buy a 4-2-1 header.

Id tell you but i dont have the XD cam. Not good to put a solid lifter cam in a hydraulic lifted ones place. I personally wouldnt bother putting it in until there is some conclusive dyno proven gains posted.
