Professor Ko (owner of Kuk's Auto in Korea) has given us a few thoughts on installing the XD cam into the Beta 1 engine. Here is a quote from the e-mail I received on it:

Basically, there are several
different issues. He says that some of the tuning shops in Korea
used to use the Beta II cam but not anymore. He has dyno tested
these and they do show some mid-range power increase, but there is
a high-rpm power _decrease_. In addition, there is a difference in
the sensor notch for the TDC detector sensor, meaning that it
affects the timing that the computer sees. Additionally, there are
some issues with the different lobe widths. The Beta II cam's lobe
is a bit more narrow, which will put more pressure on a smaller
area of the HLA. That, along with the issue of running a lobe ramp
designed for a solid lifter on a hydraulic lifter, could result
in cam wear issues.

so if you want to tow a boat around town, then by all means...switch your cams. Otherwise, don't.

I will say I have the XD cam in...its not too bad and have noticed a nice increase, but nothing major. I have not however experienced a decrease in my high-end. I am wondering if this was stock for stock, or if Mods would help to make a difference.
As for wear..... I guess only time will tell.... but the wear will round the lobe off probably a little and whatever junk left behind will come out with the only, or at lease some.
Well, I've already decided that the 1.8L cam is better than the XD cam. In addition to the problems mentioned by Professor Ko, there's a cam timing issue. Although the XD and 1.8L cams both have 232 degrees of duration, the opening an closing events are different by 3 degrees. (See: http://www.hyundaiperformance.com/forums/topic.php?t=13959). You give up .389 mm of lift with the 1.8L cam, but more than make up for it with the better timing. I had an XD cam in my '96 Elantra (1.8L) and noticed a loss off power with the "butt dyno". I put the stock 1.8L cam back in and felt a power increase. I have an XD cam in my '01 Tib right now and am going to dyno my car with it then re-dyno with a 1.8L cam.
