Default Intake question...

Hello,

I have a 2000 Elantra (automatic), and I currently have an AOS intake. I want to switch intakes as mine has gotten damaged and is now very dirty due to poor mounting position. I was told I can have my intake come right off the throttle body like in this picture:

I was also told by another that I CANNOT have this, as it will cause major problems. Needless to say, I am confused. I wanted to go with the Injen intake, but it says that it's only for manual transmission. Well, the AEM intake is supposedly only for manual, but I've seen them installed on an automatic tiburon (which was also a 2000). Aside from custom making one, which I an prepared to do, what are my options for good CAI's?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Mourningstar

What i gather from the question you are asking, you like to know the difference between a Cold Air Intake and a Short Ram Pipe.

Short Ram Pipe

This is good if you are only looking for upper RPM power. This is so as the SRP has a shorter travel with very little bends between cone to the intake manifold. This means that the air suction to the IM is at its strongest. However during idling and lower RPM, it is basically sucking in the hot air in the engine bay.

Cold Air Intake

This is as what it's name is....looking for cold air. The best I have seen in terms of location and build is AEM. The location is just above the bottom engine cover (you need to cut a hole) in the bumper area. It is the furthest point from the hot engine bay, yet protected from most water splashing during rain.

This sort of intake is good for across the powerband power but at upper reaches, it will lose out to the SRP due to the longer pipe travel and bends.

I dont think it matters if its MT or AT.....this is an intake issue and I dont see the relationship to the kind of transmission type.

PS:.....I dont see your TB in the pics.........I think I am wrong ...but I dont see your TB

Ok, for our Elantra, you can't have it coming off the TB. I have the an automatic Elantra and Tib, and the AEM fits perfectly on both, all you have to do is cut the inner splash guard a little bit, with some tin snips. Easy install, HUGE performance. Much much better than the AOS, which I tossed out the window a couple months ago, due to the battery tray almost eating a hole through it,lol. I would definately go with the AEM, if I were you. Get the polished one, it would look good with your car

I see what your saying mourningstar, well the pic you posted is a pic from a kspec.com car, its joonie's, well from what i understand, k-spec, and a-spec cars are different in that some have mafs and some have maps, im not sure if you can remove a map, but you cant remove a maf, obviuosly we cant see whats under the heat sheilding in your picture, but lets jsut say thats an a-spec car, with a mass air flow sensor, you CAN run it right to the TB only if you have the 2 holes in the intake pipe for the IM pressure sensor thingamajig, and another for the head exhaust tube, and then half way down it would need to be cut to incorporate the MAF, and a little farther down a 3/4 inch hole for the IAT (temp sens.)
So you can run it straight to the TB as long as you have those specs on the intake.

Can anybody correct me if Im wrong concerning a topic in this post.

I'm very interested in this AEM intake. I'd need some good instructions as to how it goes in, though. Hit me up on AIM: boosted STi
