97-01 Tiburon/Elantra AEM CAI Install *(Done on an Automatic, Manual install may slightly vary)*
If you have a 'Revision A' Tib or Elantra, with the Vap. Canister in the fenderwell, you have to relocate it. Please do a search on how to move it.
First, remove the battery. Negative side, then positive side terminals, undo the one bolt that holds the battery down. Remove the bolts on the battery tray, and take the tray out. Now, take out the stock air filter components and the resonator. You engine bay should now look like picture A. Take note of the black splash sheild at the bottom of the engine, outlined in blue in picture B. This is the sheild you will have to cut later. There are 3 bolts that hold the front of this sheild at the front/bottom of the car. I advise you take them out now. Picture C
Now, jack the driver's side up and remove the front driver's side wheel. You have to either remove complety the entire wheel well liner picture D, or just partly undo, which I prefer. You have 2 screws on the driver's side of the bumper that hold the well liner that you have to remove. You also have about 6 screws on the actual well liner that have to be removed as well. Now, just bend back the liner and fix it somehow so it stays in place, so you can do the surgery on the splash sheild : ) picture E.
You can use tin snips(about 10 bucks at Wal*Mart), which I use(d) or something similar; sawzall, dremel w/saw blade attachment, etc. to cut the splash sheild. You should be able to judge by now, how much you have to cut out. I cut out just about the whole thing, since it's pretty pointless to just leave a tiny section. So, yeah, go ahead and chop out the entire thing : ) If you look down from your engine bay, you should see the same thing as in picture F. *(The pipe is already in place on the picture, just ignore that)*
You should now be able to position the intake pipe as well now. It's next to near impossible to get the pipe to go in from the actual engine bay in an automatic so you have to 'feed' the pipe in from the bottom. So, you need a friend to help with the pipe, once it's in the bay from being put in from the bottom. With the pipe in, you should see the same thing as picture F and G. Make sure one of you(you or your friend)is holding the pipe, so you can put the silicone connector on at this time, don't fasten it down yet).
Now, you have to 'install' the screw in holder that comes with the intake. The instructions that come with the intake cover this well, so I will just provide a picture of it, picture H and I.
Last part of the acutal install is the filter, easy part here. Just slap the filter on, tighten it down and your done there. Go back to the engine bay and tighten the silicone connector onto the MAF. After the filter is on, it should look like picture J.
You are now done with the install. Reinstall the wheel liner, and place every screw you took off back in. Place your wheel back on and torque it down good and tight. Jack your car back down, put the battery tray back in, and reinstall the battery. Positive side first then negative. Also, you should reset your ECU, before you redo the battery, just push the brake pedal down for about 15 seconds.
Congratulations~!~ You are now done. Job well done, go and enjoy the new sound and power you have gained.
