Default bbtb and im upgrade

I am still confused about the im and bbtb upgrade after reading several of the posts so I was looking for some advice. I have a 99 elantra auto w/ nology wires, plugs, and ignition amp, ss 4-2-1 headers, race-cat, 2.25" exhaust system w/ magnaflow muffler, unorthodox crank pulley, and aem cai.
1. So im and bbtb is the next step right?
2. How large can the stock IM be bored to (I've read 58" and 61")?
3. Is a new TB that important since I don't plan to go FI?
4. If I did upgrade, would I need new fuel injectors or pressure regulator w/ all the other upgrades?
5. Would the 1.8 semi-hi cam be a better upgrade (SR doesn't sell it anymore:?? w/ adjustable cam gears?
6. I talked to a tuner and he said that upgrades can HURT performance if not tuned right and to get it tuned would be about $900 and increase it by about 30hp. I don't know about spending that much but is that right?

I like the kspec im and bbtb combo, but don't want to spend the $1000. Plus wouldn't 70mm opening be too much since I want to stay N/A? Sorry about the length of the post, but I know you guys are the experts and your advice in the past has helped tremendously. thank a bunch and hopefully I'll get it dynoed and post the results after I get everything done along w/ some pics.

you can bore out your stock IM to 61mm max... you can get a aftermarket TB or get your stock TB bored out to 58mm max.. what ever your choice is you should match the IM to the TB size.. the choice is yours.. a 58mm aftermarket TB would be a bit better then boring out your stock TB but boring it out isnt that bad either.. your should really need to go too big.. i say 58mm is good size to go with.. i wouldnt recommend getting adjustable cam gears yet.. the 1.8 cam should help performance a bit.. sharkracing doesnt sell it no more.. but i have one im selling.. email vicstylez@hotmail.com if interested..

So Ill get the new 1.8 cam, around 60mm bbtb and have the im matched. What about a S-AFC or something like that. Would that help a bit? If I have it tuned by this shop once I have all of these mods would he adjust the air/fuel, timing, and such so that I wouldn't need to buy a S-AFC? I wouldn't think so if I spent the $950 for him to tune it.

yes an s-acf would be helpful.. you need to the s-afc to get it tuned and it would probably be cheaper to tune it with that then anything else..

I don't see how an adjustable cam gear would be much of an asset to a beta1, or 2 for that matter.. aren't both camshafts chained together, and controlled by the same "gear"

I actually read that post and from what I got from it, it said to stay away from the xd cam, but the 1.8 would be better for the 2.0L beta 1 motors. Wouldn't it help along with the other mods? From what I've read here and http://webhome.idirect.com/~trini/car/power.html, the cam helps.

While the cam gear may not provide much of a hp increase, I don't know anyone here who has dyno'd it. In some dohc engines, hp is increased by advancing BOTH cams, not just one. I know a mitsu eclipse non-turbo that made the best power with both cam gears advanced about 2 degrees. I am certainly not saying that is true with every car, or most cars, but it is something to think about.

uncgelantra, I don't know what "tuner" you talked to, but a 30 hp increase is alot for the beta motor. Also, I don't know what you are saying will give you that 30 hp bump. Furthermore, what "tuning" is he talking about. Can this guy re map stock ecu's? Adding an SAFC would help with increasing power by allowing the fuel ratio to be altered. Maybe that is what he is talking about. To "tune" the motor, you would need a way to adjust the air fuel ratio.

Get a larger throttle body and bore your intake manifold out to match. Get the 1.8 or xd cam, an safc and then take it to a dyno. It shouldn't take $900 worth of dyno to tune your safc for a simple air fuel ratio. The dyno's around here are about $75 an hour, and that would be 12 hours of dynoing.

Yeah, screw the guy and his $900. I found someone else that can install ALL of the parts once they come in and there is a machine shop that can port match the IM to match the TB. I ordered a 60mm TB and will bore the IM to be the same. Also ordered new belts, cam gear (looks like my car only has one) from SR, A/T cooler, ground kit, DOT 4 brake fluid, 7-color changing LED underbody kit and will buy S-AFC II in a couple of days. Is the S-AFC II that much better than the first one? It sounds like you can do a ton of more stuff with it. The guy who will install these said that he would tune the car as well with the S-AFC since I don't really know what the first step to using that would be or if it is user friendly. Also going to get new brake pads (Raybestos or KVR or Axxis pads), can't decide. Thanks for all of your imput and I will be sure to post pics of the car once competed.
