Default Learning about Apexi SAFC settings - 2004 Elantra GT

I'm new to Hyundai forums. I have a CAI on order, but am not really thinking of exhausts mods right now, mainly because I have a brand new car. Not really enjoying scrapping my knuckles, re-programming the ECU appeals to me.

One unit I have searched on is the Apexi S-AFC II. Once the unit is installed is there a way to tell if you are at "optimum". Or is it just guess at certain settings - go dyno - try again re-dyno, etc. I guess what I'm asking is; how can I find out what are the best values to plug in to get the most zap out of my car with the Apexi S-AFC II ? If someone has a better idea of biggest bang for the buck excluding exhaust, I'm all ears.

BTW - I am only willing to spend $1,000 on performance mods - I want to stay n/a.

all the SAFC does is adjust fuel trim... so your power gain will be dictacted by your air fuel mixture.

I am planning on buying a SAFC and setting it run in gas saver mode *a bit more lean* when throttle is below 25% and then make it more rich when throttle is over 80% *pedal to the medal*

if you want something to give you the most "zap" you are going to want something that will adjust timing also. being natrually aspirated you basically set your timming as advanced as you can without ping or knock... MSD DIS-2 PN 6212 has programmable ignition functions that will let you advance your ignition.

both of these should be dyno tuned, and the beauty of dyno tuning, you know when you are at "peak" power cuz the dyno will tell you!

The SAFC will not save you THAT much gas. To be perfectly honest, it's gonna take you a loooooooonnnnnggg time to save $300ish on gas that you spent on the SAFC. Being the fact that then the car isn't floored, the SAFC isn't really doing very much really anyways. I mean, it is, but not to the extent that it is under WOT conditions.

Anyways, in response to the original question, You only really need an SAFC if you have a ton of mods. Otherwise it's pretty much useless. If ALL you have is a CAI and not planning on an exhaust, don't even waste your money on it. Your not going to see much of any kinda gain without mods. I'm taking, CAI, header, full exhaust, BBTB, Bored and port matched IM, some cam work even if its just the 1.8 semi hi intake cam.

Unless your doing all of these things, save your money and spend it on something more worth your time and money. Not only will you be blowing about $300 on something that isn't going to do much for your car other than lean the top end out a little bit on a near stock car, but with every following modification that you perform on your car, you WILL have to go back and get the entire thing redyno tuned EVERY time. Hope this clears up some questions.
