AEM bypass question

I searched the forum but couldn't find it. So here is my question. I know that AEM bypass is a round thing that has few holes in it <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> but I'm not exactly sure how does it work in order to prevent external things such as water, snow and etc. to enter which might cause engine hydrolocking. Can someone explain me or is there any web site that explains about this AEM bypass in details?

There are rubber flaps inside of the bypass. When inake vacuuum exceeds a certain point, it will "open" those flaps, allowing air in through the bypass. There is a fine micromesh screen there to stop any large particles, but smaller particles will still get through. It should only stay open as long as the filter is submurged in water. Once the filter can breath freely, the flaps close again, and you suck up air through the CAI again.

And how long does AEM bypass last? Should I change... say, once a year?
