Ok...dont get too pissed off with this question....but here goes...i have a 97 tib, 16valve DOHC...i was wondering, is this a "beta" engine?, if it is, how do i tell? if it isnt what exactly is a beta engine? thanks for the help, and dont crucify me.
Yes, your motor is the "Beta" motor. All 97-99 Tiburons have the Beta motor; so do all 96-98 Elantras. Now, usually I would be the person that would give you a very hard time about asking this question, but I'm trying to be more helpful and less of an a$$hole Plus I'm putting your motor in my Accent
PAccent.... did you fall in love????
your not acting like a complete ass for once
wats the deal
and yes the beta, i love those motors.....
No Mach5, I did NOT fall in love. I'm single (hint to the ladies out there J/K) But really, I used to be a total a$$ for what reason, I don't know. But I realized that most of the people in here are cool and they are just asking questions, I used to let stupid questions bother me and that would piss me off. And even though I was trashing everyone's questions, people like Autobot would still help me out on some of my questions; which I think is really cool So now, I figure if I know the answer to even a stupid question, I'll help out as much as I know, without putting them down. Yes, I'm a changed man and I owe it all to Viagara; oh wait, I'm only 19 years old, maybe next year. PEACE-
Actually all 97-2001 Tiburon's have the Beta (either 1.8L or 2.0L), the 2003 Tiburon 4-cyl is a 2.0L Beta, 96-98 Elantra's had the 1.8L Beta, and the 1999+ Elantra's have the 2.0L Beta engine.

Thanks for the help and not bein an ass. j/k, but seriously, thanks for the help. just a couple more quick q's. why is it called a beta, and what exactly makes it a beta? thanks again
It's called the "Beta" because that's the second letter in the Greek alphabet. The first motor was called the "Alpha". I assume the next motor will be the "Gamma", then the "Delta", "Epsilon", etc...

actually the next motor is the "delta" series found in the new tib and the santa fe.....epsilon will not be used due to the fact that its TM'ed by mitsubishi and the galant epsilon isnt 245 yrs old yet....
so in 25 yrs look for the hyundai epsilon v-12 found in the 2025 tiburon
