Default Oil

I just bought my 97 1,8L Tiburon last weekend, and now its time to change the oil. All I know about the oil which was being used by the previous owner is that it is Synthetic and that he used Mobil 1. So I bought the ost expensive Synthetic Mobil 1 Oil I could find...it reads 15W-50 Performance Driving Formula. Is this ok to use on the tiburon?

Also, when we were driving the car back to my city, the CHECK ENGINE light came on. The old owner dos not know what it is but he said its no big deal, the car has a Magnaflow Performance exhaust on it, and unknown brand air intake. What could be cuasing the check ebgine light to turn on?

P.S. I cant communicate with the previous owner because he lives in Toronto and I don't and he works 18hrs a day...

thanx

Go to Autozone or a garage and have them scan it. I had that intermittent CEL and it was a bad o2 sensor.

How many miles on your "new" tib? It might be time for new o2 sensors.. they are only good for a limited amount of miles. I think mine are starting to go as well.. every so often I catch the engine "hunting" at idle

As for oil... I have used Mobil One in ALL of my vehicles... 167,000 in a first gen Excel (until it finally decided to smoke) and now 77,000 in my Tib. I put 100,000 on a fiat engine with it.. and right now my vanagon is approaching 200,000 with the last 50,000 using Mobil One. It is a good oil that lives up to it's claims.

This is what I recommend you do.

Since some people have problems with mobil 1

and since you think is is expensive, as do I.

Most ppl run or have switched to Castrol Blend 5w-30

Also...I'd buy a GUNK 5 min enigne flush, and make sure you got any filth out.

also like the man said...get the CEL code scanned.

garage will charge you.

autozone wont.

Kinda off topic. But I've read that it's bad once you go fully synthetic to go backwards to a semi or a non synthetic. Is this true? I am looking to take your advice and go to Castorol I think.

For the check engine light, change out the PCV valve first and see if that has any effect. Then try something else.

Default Re: Oil

thanks for all your help guys, i have a friend that works in canadian tire whom i called up yesterday and he said he will run the test for me for free

as for the oil question, can i put in the oil that i bought into the car?
tha car has 149km, or roughly 92miles on it, and just to make sure i will list the oil which i already bought for the car

"Anti-Wear Technology, Mobil 1, 15W-50 Performance Driving Formula" is it synthetic
then on the bacck it has two circles with a smaller circle inside a larger circle, within the larger circle is says "API SERVICE SL/CF" and inside the smaller circle is says " SAE 15W-50"

I use Castrol 10w40 (not synthetic), the car now has over 130,000 miles, and has been driven very hard. Absolutely No problems thus far.

I do agree the 15w50 is probably a bit much though.
