It refers to projects that you can do yourself. A do it yourselfer project.

ECU = Engine Control Unit. It is the car's computer.

and john, BHP brake horsepower? what happened to base horsepower as in hp at the engine?

Its brake horsepower, because how is measures is through brake resistance, and that is used to calculate the horsepower.

HLA is a good one, like stated above they are hydraulic lash adjusters, they are NOT however lifters, they do perform some of the same functions such as take out slack in the valve train.
