Problem with my Scoupe

Hello all....

I just have a question regarding my Scoupe's cooling system. It's a 91, 5 speed.

I just bought the car this summer and I noticed that the water temp. gauge doesn't work, it just stays at cold. Another problem is that the rad fad doesn't come on at all.

If I just get a new thermo sensor for the rad fan will that solve the problem or does the temp sensor control that..

Also, for the gauge problem, if I just hook up an aftermarket unit into where the stock temp sensor goes, will that mess anything up, or should I just replace the stock sensor and gauge unit...
