I just stumbled onto this forum looking for info on the Hyundai in general and the Elantra in particular. I just bought a 95 Elantra, 1600 5spd, dark blue faded/peeling paint, tan interior, Konig wheels, rest is all stock from a friend of mine. I am amazed the Hyundai has this much of a following. Good job people, and keep up the good work!
A bit of cool info for Hyundai fans, I went to Korea in 1990 while I was in the Marines and saw over there Hyundai builds EVERYTHING! City busses, big industrial construction equipment (Caterpillar clones), cars and trucks of every type, everything! Once out in town a buddy of mine saw one particular bus where some of the letters had fallen off the nameplate, and he made a joke how the letters spelled "U DAI" as in "you die". Alcohol was involved.....hmmm........
Anyway, my question: Where can I find info on the check engine codes, and how do I retrieve them? My 95 Elantra needs to pass a California smog check. Symptoms include with engine warmed up sitting in neutral it will switch from fast idle back to low idle and back to fast idle a lot.
TIA, and I hope to learn much here! From my avatar and my name you can tell I am a Volkswagen fan, but don't hold that against me.
WEBMASTER: When I tried to post for the first time onto the forums, Norton flagged a MSSQL_Null_Packet_DOS alert from the shop.hyundaiperformance.com server. Normal?

Whaddy mean Volkswagen parts won't fit a Hyundai?
Check engine codes as well as alot more info can be found in http://www.hyundaiusa.com/Owners/Car_Care/Main/Maintenance.asp under hyundai WebTech.
I am definately not an expert on check engine lights, but it sounds like it's either an ignition system problem(i.e. spark plugs/wires, power transistor) or your O2 sensor might be going a little crazy.
Has the fuel efficiency dropped lately (more trips to the pump, etc.)?
Triple Vs were once solid, high-quality cars, but you gotta admit that R32 is a nicely crafted POS.

Monza, thanks for the reply. I don't know about the mileage as I haven't driven this car for a few years before buying it, and right now it's got a drivers side axle out for replacement as the outer CV is shot. I will know more when I get it on the road again but the plugs and wires are an easy fix so I will try that first. It makes the occasional knocking sound sometimes that has been told on the forums as being a crossfire problem and the wires are sitting in oil under the cover (near 100,000 mile motor) so it makes sense.

Off topic, so I will be brief, and I feel it bears mentioning. I follow new VW's with a detached interest, I am really into classic aircooled models. VW these days is living on their legacy and building some of the lowest production cost cars around while charging the sticker price based on the brand. Their overall plan is to go upscale and leave the econobox image behind but not spend an extra EuroDollar in doing so. Go look at a used VW on a lot and count the little wigits, digits, and knick-knacks broken all over it. Replacement parts are the same sh*t quality. And yes the R32 is a nicely marketed POS, but it is built on the Golf platform - a car intended to be tossed out with the trash when it breaks down. I doubt it will even hold comparable resale value to another disposable car the WRX.

Yep, either tune-up or O2, probably the first since your car has been healing its wounds for a lil while. I hope it works out for you.
In an aside, it's nice to finally meet a vw fan who is not a pompous, arrogant a-hole.
Alot of ppl don't see that and I agree with your statement "these cars are replacable".
I would love nothing more than vw to kick one of the behemoths smack in the balls. BMW with its vulgur design and Merc. with its confused customer base would make prime targets. A dream, but one can still have those.
Yeah I had the same problem with my 98 tiburon i changed the wires and plugs and the car ran good afterward. Only now my check Engine light has reappeared. But it's OK cuz i think i am gonna trade it in for some other "disposable" car. So I just took the Check Engine Light Bulb Out.
