Default new to accent, tech q's

Just picked this car up, 01 1.5 SOHC 5Spd hatchback, for my sister, and am giving it the thorough exam it deserves.

Does the computer drive the temperature gauge? That is, is there one sensor for both the computer to use (for fuel mix, fan, etc) and also the gauge? It works dandy but the fan comes on at about "normal operating" temp on the gauge after it's been idling for a while.

Does this thing have a multi-speed cooling fan? Seems kinda slow; am used to GM stuff with hurricane power.

Any special antifreeze instructions? I drained & filled with Peak "normal" green ethylene glycol. It seems to have burped ok.

What does Hyundai say for oil weight vs temp? I have no owner's manual and there aren't any stickers anywhere to be seen. This is merely academic curiosity; I fit in 3.5 quarts of chevron supreme 5w30 with a new supertech filter which I'm sure will be more than fine. Might be getting a manual off ebay some day when one for an 01 pops up.

Did this car ever come with 155/80R13s? The sticker in the glovebox implies this was an option. It's riding on 175/70R13s that are still tiny to me.

Does anyone else think the gearing is a bit short in 5th? It can take almost any hill without downshifting but is buzzy on the highway.

Were champion spark plugs OE? I found some RC10YC4s that grew to .060; The car has 51k miles. Put in some NGKs at .040, what the sticker under the hood said. They were really stuck in there too.

Does this car have the modified E-Code/DOT hybrid headlights? There's a nice cutoff to the low beam.

Is there a low fuel light? The dealer delivered it on "E", but yet, no light.

And a comment: It'd have been nice on the coupe if the seatbelt went through some sort of loop on the headrest so one doesn't have to reach an extra foot back to fish it out.

I'll answer what I can...

There's two coolant temp sensors, one for the ECU and one for the gauge in the dash.

It's a single speed fan, and it will do the job fine. Remember it's a tiny engine with a pretty efficient cooling system.

No special antifreeze.

I believe 10W30 is the Hyundai standard, but depending on your local climate 5W30 should be fine.

NGK spark plugs are OEM. Most people use NGK V-Power, they seem to be the best bang for the buck. Just change them every other oil change or so.

That's all I know (or think I know ), you can find a lot of good info on http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech . There you can find TSB's, complete Shop Manuals and more. 8D

I find fifth to only be adequate on the highways...

WRT to the fuel gauge... the light will come on when there are 2 gallons left in the tank and yes, it will be reading "E". It's kind of unnerving, I never go below 3 gallons because I can't let it touch the bottom line. (I do want to take a turn and have the engine cut out because the remaining gas is on one side of the tank... it's happened to me before)...

I've had the best luck with a 10W30 synthetic blend. The HLA's seem to be sensitive to oil pressure and if you have any that are marginal, this weight oil seems to be the best... (I have an HLA that is marginal)...

Welcome to the boards!

Does my 1.5 have HLAs? I'd sort of expect them but from reading this BBS they're sort of a "new thing" to Hyundai....

Well the copper NGK V-Powers are good for probably 10K miles, but performance will begin to deteroriate before that time. It's only about $6 for all four, why not make it part of the oil change routine to keep the car running top notch? It also makes it easier to remember when to change them. Every other oil change would work fine as well.

Actually, all hyundai motors with the exception of the 2.0 Beta2 motor have HLA's. The reasoning was a quieter valvetrain and less maintenance seeing as Hyundai's image was (and for the most part continues to be) less than stellar.
