Default what tires to put on 15" mags ?

I've got an 99 Accent with the 4x114.3mm bolt pattern. My friends is offering to give me some compatible old 15" mags. Is there a certain size of tire I should use to minimize the strain on the engine which will have to turn a larger tire???

I see lots of people on the forums say they've got 15, 16 and even 17 inchs mags on their Accents.... Does this add extra strain on the engine and risk shortening engine lifespan?

195-50-15 or 205-50-15 tires

You arent going to break a motor with larger wheels. How the hell did you ever come to that conclusion?

A larger wheel diameter would mean more distance travelled per revolution. So I figured the engine would be revving lower with 15" wheel than with smaller wheels, and I don't know if this can adversly affects the engine, transmission or other parts designed specifically for 13" wheels....

You arent changing a thing if you buy a tire with a shorter sidewall with the larger rim... A 195-50-15 tire has the same overall diameter as the stock 175-70-13. Its called "plus sizing". Check out the Tire Rack's tech articles...

www.tirerack.com

The only thing that really gets thrown off by a larger diameter wheel/tire is the speedo. The only mechanical problem that can happen is you'll run out of clearance in the fender. You can shorten the life of the strut and make the ride harsher if the wheel is too heavy i.e. 20+ pounds, as well as make the car brake longer and accelerate slower. Stick to wheels under 15 pounds and you'll be fine.

your speedo should be the least of your concerns when going to a larger diameter.

tires can be referred to as 'variable gearing devices' due to the effects that different sizes have on power delivery - your powerband is dependent on the rolling diameter of your tires.

going smaller than stock lowers the effective gearing resulting in higher revs at lower speed (power comes faster, ends sooner) and going larger will do the opposite & make you slower off the line and weaken throttle response at speed.

zoombots you seemed to have the right idea on this - its all about outer diameter - rim size wouldn't matter if it was 10" or 15" as long as the tire was sized accordingly. that is plus sizing, as skierd mentioned.

175-70-13 = 22.6"
195-50-15 = 22.7"
205-50-15 = 23.1"

you want the 195-50-15 size.

Also, your friend`s tyres (tires LOL) won`t be any good on your car unless the offset is close to Hyundai`s +42mm..
Nick.

Speaking from experience, you barely notice the half inch from the 205's. That being said, if/when I get another accent its getting 195-50-15's for street driving (if it even sees that). Race tires will be... wider.:devious:
