Default More robust transaxle for 95 Elantra?

Hey all
The 95 Elantra I have I got from my ex-girlfriend. A couple of years ago I changed the transaxle out for her as it was wearing out. Hard to put into gear, grinding, noise, all the symptoms. The job was straightforward, and the way the Mitsu engine is mounted it makes it a breeze with the supports holding the motor from falling on you. Fairly easy job. The ex is the original owner, she had the OE trans rebuilt around 50,000 miles, and the trans in it now is a swap job. Seems like quite a few transaxles for a very stock and mild engine.

Anyway, since now I own this car, I got to wondering, is there any other transaxle in the Mistubishi inventory that fits the 1600 that is more robust? I am trying to behave and stay on the newbie forum until I become a "made man". :

Default Re: More robust transaxle for 95 Elantra?

there are a few options. I get confused with the Mitsu tranny codes though...

the most robust would be from an AWD 90-94 Eclipse/Talon/Laser converted to FWD, but thats a little extra work. finding one from the FWD turbo version of the same cars will be almost as good. even from the non-turbo should be an upgrade.

also the early 4cyl Sonatas have a suitable gearbox than can be fitted.

there is a lot of mixing & matching of drivetrain parts for these Mitsu-based Hyundais. you can get a few different combinations from swapping bellhousings & flywheels, ending up with a larger, stronger clutch & a beefier trans.

I find that the HyundaiBishi info is quite thin here - I spend more of my time at www.4g61t.org for deeper tech discussion on these platforms.
