I don't know anyone personally who died in a race, but I know a guy from my school who killed someone while racing. You might have heard about it in the news, it was fairly big when it happened. The two guys racing wern't tuners like most of the guys here, but were each racing in Mercedes belonging to their parents, going about 140kph in a 50 zone. They went around a blind turn in the road and came across a taxi making a left turn. The taxi driver probably never knew what happened, one of the cars slammed into his passenger side, hitting it so hard that he pushed the car something like 10 meters sideways where it jumped the curb and hit a light post on the driver side. The taxi driver was killed instantly when he went into the post. He was on his last call of the night and was days away from getting his Canadian citizenship.
It had a fairly big impact on most of the guys at our school. I didn't know these two very well since they're older than me, but I still knew and respected them. The whole experiance is shocking and really upsetting. Not only did these guys kill an innocent man, but they have completely ruined their futures as well.
Here's one news article about the story, there are hundreds if you google the names of the guys:

My point in telling this story is that while I didn't know the man killed, I knew the boys who killed him, and in doing so they are almost dead themselves. These two could have done almost anything with their lives - they had money, education, connections, and intelligence. They just made one bad decision (but come on, they were still just being 18 year old guys). Its such a waste.
And it
was 100% avoidable. Please remember that next time you want to speed or race, or anything that could have consequences like this. Thanks.
