in the summer when i would put on the a/c, i could definetly feel a lag in my performance. yet, in my mom's v-8, i feel no difference. is this because her car has a much bigger engine and mine is only a 4 cylinder? also, does havin the a/c on cause a huge diff. in performance or only a little. thanx.

well it does make a diff when its on and its off, remember that the AC is powerd by the engine via drive belts, I don't know exactly how much it takes from you but as you could see it changed when you turned it on or off.

well.. just from my knowledge, the v8 or v6 have to work less than the I4 when the A/C is on. the reason is because I4 has 4 cylinders and they have to work faster to get the same performance. but v6 have 6 cylinders and v8 has 8 cylinders and they have to work less... i dunno if it makes sense. ^^;;;
1-2-3-4 <--- Slowly without A/C
1-2-3-4 <--- Fast With A/C
1-2-3-4-5-6 <--- Slowly without A/C
1-2-3-4-5-6 <--- They still have time to make the same performance as I4 with A/C on.
am i confusing you?

Consider the number of power strokes within a given timeframe, and the crank angle at which these strokes happen in relation of 4 cylinders versus 8. Now, remember some hiskool math. Remember whe we cursed and swore when we tried understanding how to work with Sine Waves? Same thing here bro, imagine axis [x] as a given space of time, say one minute. Now, there are more cylinders firing on the V8 where at idle the crank makes the same number of revolutions as 4 cylinders.[Greater frequency per given unit time.]
This translates into more intital torque with which to overcome the resistance of the compressor.
Hope that helped.:chinese:

Not that any of it really makes a difference when you go to WOT. There should be a switch in there that turns off the compressor. At least my 99 tib has one.

WOT??? i just took off the belt and tensioner. i'll put it back on when its time for its use. but, yeah, it drains power. but not as much, if any if you have an aftermarket pulley.
you have to be carefull about disconnecting the a/c compressor ... it still has to spin now and then in order to keep all moving parts lubricated... up here in jersey we tell people to turn on thier a/c every now and then in the winter to keep all the seals wet with the oil..
When the A/C is one it takes about 5hp and 30 torque.
Now a v6 and v8 make more torque. Hence why you dont notice the difference in performance.
If you dynoed the v6 and v8 they would dyno less with a/c on.
If you slap a s/c or turbo on your car. You would not notice the a/c drain like on the v6 or v8.
And yes, the A/C turns off when the TPS is above 70% which indicates Full throttle.
