Default Steering Wheel Removal

I'm starting to wonder if I've missed something...

I want to fit an aftermarket steering wheel, but the original one just doesn't want to be parted from the car.

I have disconnected and removed the airbag, and undone the centre (22mm) nut, the wheel should just pull off, but it doesn't.

Is there something else which needs to be undone?

TIA

P.S. Yes I'm sure I want to change it and yes my insurance company is OK about it and no its not illegal to remove an air bag here

you need a steering wheel hub puller.

the hub is on a coned spline, forced on by the big nut.

a puller pushes on the shaft and pulls the hub as you wind it in.

Do you have a shop manual, wise to get one if you dont.

Page ST-18 step 4:

"After making alignment marks on the steering shaft and wheel, removing the steering
wheel using the special tool.
NOTE Do not hammer the steering wheel to remove it: doing so may damage the
steering column"

The special tool page ST-5, 09561-11022 - Steering wheel puller.

you certainly did miss something, try RTFM.

lucky guys overseas.. you don't need the airbags... Personally, I hate the things. The one and only accident I had with an airbagged car had me getting more hurt by the airbag than by the accident.

Get the puller much easier. Just becareful of the threads it's not pretty if you do and it doesnt take much to bend them either. Not sure about over there but here most places you can rent them and you get your money back when your done.

Bent threads=Bad Day.

Hey Xorro

I know that you have made up your mind to remove the SRS steering wheel but I do hope that you seriously reconsider......I used never to think much about SRS till what happened to me a month ago.........:depressed:

Consider changing to a SRS sports steering wheel from MOMO?..........

Remove it, the stock steering wheel is ugly and if you build the rest of your car safely (brakes, suspension, seats with harnesses) yo should be good to go.

Xorro I got one at my local Hyundai dealership for 40 dollars. But I've heard their not getting them anymore but were giving the 800 number for the company that prints them. So you may want to check is worth the money.
