I think only 97s are captive...just like 97s are only rev a...but I could be wrong. Mine aren't and mines a 99.

fronts r captive, rears r not

edit....captive means they r bolted onto the hub
non captive means the only thing holding on the rotor is the rims, a caliper, and maybe a little screw (better)

so whats it matter about puttin on aftermarket wheels? i just ordered 17"icw rims, dont tell me they wont fit on my 1998 tibby! i dont see why they wouldn't, i would think captive are better, and what do you do to fix them if it is a problem? take they out?

98s ARE captive. Only 99-up Tibs aren't.

With captive rotors, there are four bolts, in between the wheel lug bolts, holding the rotor, bearing and hub together as one assembly. You CANNOT take these out. There are wheels made for cars with captive rotors, and these have cavities in the back, between the holes for the lug bolts. You can see what I mean by looking at the back of your stock wheels. Any decent wheel shop should be aware of the captive rotor issue, and shouldn't sell you wheels that won't clear these bolts. If the wheels they sold you don't fit, demand your money back, because they really should be aware of this stuff.

On 99-up RDs, which are non-captive, the hub and bearing are a separate assembly from the rotor. There will be one or two small screws holding the rotor onto the hub, but these can be removed safely. They're only there to hold the rotor on the car before the wheels are installed, when the car's being assembled at the factory.

I think they changed the design in mid 99 so some cars may have captive rotors and some may not.

Captive on the left, non captive on the right.
