Hey, im considering a targa top for my 2000 Hyundai Tiburon. I was wondering what everybody thought about them. I heard that they **** up your ride because the car wasnt built for the roof to be off. Can i get anybodys input. Thank you...
It has been done before. Ravdav had it done a few years back.
If you feel like spending a lot of money then do it, but I'd rather do something else with the money.
Lots of welding, frame support so the car doesn't sag in the middle, makes your car heavier, more chances of leaking, lots of down time, lots of money, etc...
Ok, honestly although it can be done, it is not wise. Your frame is a unibody which means the roof is part of it. You cut that out and your car will flex unless you properly reinforce the frame.
I am assuming that you do not have even close the knowledge to do this yourself and it will take years to get there. If you want to find out how much, you need to start researching reliable places in your area who do custom body work and then start calling them. When you finally find the place that doesn't laugh in your face, check out cars they have done this too and make sure they have stood up. Then, expect to pay several thousands of dollars to have it done properly.
Honestly, if you want a targa, go buy a Del Sol.
Also, I have not heard from RavDav in several years. He used to post a lot but left the site shortly after compleating the targa top. Nobody knows how well it held up.

Yeah, there is no way in hell id do that myself...lol. I called a few people, and youre right, they laughed at me. However, i did find one place that said they have done it on a half a dozen cars or so. I know its not many, but they did to it. My only thing is going to be how much money its going to cost. if it is going to be several thousand dollars, yeah, there is no way that is going to happen. lol. Hopefully if i talk to the guy enough, im going to be in a show, i'll tell him i'll let him put his name on my car or w/e, maybe cut me down a deal. ::crosses fingers:: I just thought it would be like, totally bad ass to have a targa top. and no way am i getting a del sol. rather just keep my sunroof. lol...
I am not trying to be discouraging, just realistic but I seriously doubt the guy would do it cares if you will be in a show for several reasons.
1) A single show does not mean anything.
2) You have nothing done to your car as it is. (You have to spend thousands befor companies will give you thousands)
3) Your 17. Although this doesn't seem fair, it reflects on the lack of experience and knowledge you have in the automotive industry and with shows. It also prevents you from entering in any type of contract.
Honestly, if you knew how many people come up to these companies trying to get sponsorships you head would spin. One example is with Alpine developments. They get people trying to get sponsorships all the time and many of them don't even own the car yet. They even had one guy send them pictures of a Tib claiming it was his to get a s/c sponsorhip. the funny thing about that was it was a car already sponsored by them and one of the pics sent showed the s/c already installed. LOL
Companies don't just offer sposrships because they like your ideas, they usually require some proof of ability to produce what you claim.
You will have a better chance of getting your car on Overhaulin then getting a sponsorship from where you stand.

Im gonna be 18 next month, also, i have dropped 12 grand into my car. so i have spent my thousands, and as of next month, i'll be able to enter that contract. But i dont want a full sponsorship. Because they are so on your balls about everything that you do, it ends up really being their car.
