Re: max bhp for Coupe 2.0SE '99
If you are going for serious performance, then definitely go turbo, but it's going to be a serious budget also (of course achieving the same performance with a normally aspirated engine would be even more expensive, but that has been discussed a lot).
If you are not crazy over high HP numbers, but want to add some decent power while keeping your expenses under control, you have some N/A options.
First thing would be improving admission with a cone filter and Cold Air Intake, that helps and sounds sweet. Next would be to replace your exhaust with a performance one (the slightest is to just change the OEM muffler; the complete thing would be high flow cat, complete 2,25" line, and if you don't have that cat-integrated manifold that is common in the UK, a header).
Next step would be cams. If you can get OEM parts for cheap, the OEM intake camshaft from the 1.8 or 1.6 liter engine (same as your engine but smaller) will improve your torque and power, without costing you to loose much on bottom end range. If you want more serious performance, try the cams offered on this site's store; only intake, or intake and exhaust.
Then Throttle Body (and an Air Ram) would be nice to complete a decent N/A setup.
I don't think you guys in UK have your ECU's programmed to comply with very high emission standards as the OBDII, so all that (or some of it as you choose) will give you more power than people in the US gets.
