Transmission Problems on my 97 tib 1.8

My check engine light recently came on. I take it to go get the obd codes pulled and it says its my torque converter. I did some research and found the car would still run but my gas mileage would suck. The light came on again a week later so i check it again. Then a new problem arised the transmission control module. The car runs fine!! Gas mileage could be better. Off the line acceleration could be better. Does anyone know how much these things would cost to get fixed or the severity of the problem?? Any technical knowledge would help too. Thanks

What does it mean when: In the morning when i start the car the first time i use my brakes it feels like they have barely any stopping power. But after a few minutes they come back to life. ??
