Hey, I got my car on the 19th of november, and its my daily driver, and when I got it, It was fine but after a few days it was hard to put into first gear. I mean it just doesnt want to go in, theres no noise's its just hard to shove into first. Ive kind of gotten it to where it will go into first if I let off the brake and roll a little bit. But, Now Its getting stiffer than shit, and its also getting stiffer to put into other gears. If I am downshifting, I can downshift threw 2nd, and then first its hard as hell to put it into, and when I am able to downshift into first, It makes like this wierd sound like when you put a piece of paper into a fan type noise. I thought maybe the shifter bearings might have been dry so I WD40'ed them and no luck, and If the car is off I can run it threw all the gears no problem. I hope you guys can help me out here. Thanks- Scott
i have the same problem with first gear, but its like that for a lot of standards ive driven. downshifting to first in my tib is near impossible unless the car is stopped, (i think its like this for most standards) i learned how to drive on my car so the clutch is probably pretty worn, if you are having trouble shifting i dont think the shifter has anything to do with it. it's probably just the clutch.

check your gear oil lately? Generally, even though 1st has syncros, I do not really recommend downshifting to that gear unless you really have to. You might also want to learn how to match revs, that makes it a LOT easier on the transmission.
To do that, blip the throttle as you disengage the clutch to shift, if you are good, you will be able to put the revs within a couple of hundred of where the next gear will want them. Doing this allows a smoother downshift and takes a LOT of wear and tear off of the Transmission and clutch.

I too have a prob downshifting into first, so i dont do it unless i have to. But i never have problems from a stop. However getting into reverse from a stop requires me to let of the brake and roll a little. Why is this?
dope - it sounds like you should check your clutch fluid and maybe bleed the slave cylinder. if that doesnt work i would get a new clutch because thats what it sounds like. if you fluid was low, find out if its leaking from the master or slave cylinder and replace whats leaking so it doesnt happen again.
lilo - ive never heard of a 'shift lock' do you know exactly how it works? im gonna assume that shift lock is just a condition that exists because of the syncros, i dont see any special equipment or electrical mechanism that prevents downshifting at wrong RPM's.
hell my buddy just messed up his clutch (thankfully it was already slipping anyways or he would be buying new valves at best) by missing 4th gear and going into 2nd gear. he claims the tach went over 8k at that point!!! so your 'shift lock' may just be a concept of the syncros that makes it harder to shift incorrectly, but it is still possible.

Sounds like a weak pressure plate. One of the early warning signs of impending clutch failure. When the PP gets weak, the clutch doesn't fully disengage, making it difficult to get into first gear.

i am having some problems lately as well...i know my clutch is slipping but i think my synchros have gone bad...its terribly hard to get from first to second gear at a normal speed especially speed shifting. when i even do it RIGHT! it still makes a quick grind noise. same with reverse. any ideas?
