Default tiburon engine pulsating

I just bought my son a 97 tib and yesterday the engine started pulsating, Does anyone know what this might be? I was thinking maybe a trottle sensor or something. Can you check for a code somehow without taking it to the shop. Don't know much about these cars. With my truck you can check by turning the ignition switch on and off 5 times. Is there something like that you can do? They want 70 bucks to put it on a machine. Thanks a bunch

when you say Pulsating.. you mean the idle is going up and down from about 700rpms to about 1750? If that is the case, it is probably the TPS or throttle position Sensor

I would check the air filter and make sure its clean, check the fuel pump, throttle position sensor and thats all I can think of right now.

I think I might have narrowed it down to a plug wire breaking down. If you put your foot on the brake and give it some gas its got a dead miss. I guess I'll find out when I change the wires. thanks

well.. then I would pull the plug wires one at a time... the cylinder that gives you the least amount of change in the sound and smoothness of the engine is your culperit

I say we place some bets, 5 bucks says it'll be plug #2.

I had this same problem with the idle pulsating about 3 months ago. when i took it to the manufacturer they told me to disconnect the carbon cannister if that fixes the problem then leave it for 3 days and connect it again. This worked for 3 months. Just today it started again and disconnecting it failed to fix the problem. Just been on the phone and they told me that it could be the TPS or even the computer. Or it could just be a idle sensor they really dont know this time and want to test it for code outputs. ill let you know what is found out. :dead:

I had a problem with my engine dying at idle. Turned out that all the boosting I did on a long road tri loosened up a vacuum hose. It was leaning out. I know you're not boosting, but a hose could have a hole or could have fallen off the manifold.

Also, the idle speed controller (cylinder on top of the intake manifold) could be malfunctioning.
