so my clutch has been wearing thin. all i need for replacement is clutch, pressure plate and release bearing? is that correct? i've been looking at the ones in the store here.. any ideas which one? I dont plan extreme power..mostly track just looking for something a step above stock.
second. how do i know when my syncros have gone bad? right now i have the hardest time switching to 2nd gear from 1st..its makes a grinding noise is i go faster than an old lady would shift...same with reverse anytime. is that my syncros? if so how much do they cost to have redone? THX:gasmask::rambo:
I doubt our synchros are covered under warranty, so you would either have to rebuild the tranny or get a different one. I don't think reverse has a synchro, btw. An elantra tranny has longer gears, might wanna try for that if you go that route, or a 1.8L tranny has shorter gears, if you want faster acceleration and don't care for better gas mileage. Technically you don't NEED a new pressure plate, but while your down there you may as well replace it, same with the bearing. Also you want to resurface your flywheel, so plan to get a ride to a machine shop if you get that done. And... don't forget to buy gear oil
hyundai trannys are cheap. cheaper to buy a used one with like 20k on it then to rebuild unless you want the satisfaction of knowing that you have brand spanking new parts.
tib/elantras have the same gearing. the 97 1.8 tib had shorter 4th and 5th ratios, aside than that the other gears and reverse are the same.
reverse is not a syncro, it is this little ffee moving gear that drops in place, its always going to be more difficult by design but really shouldnt be too much of a pain.
**EDIT**
oh yeah and syncros are about 70 bucks apiece, and the 6 end bearings that you really *should* replace when youre in there are on average like 25 bucks apiece. the shims are like 8-14 cents apiece but its guessing the right sizes that you will need that is a pian.
also having a shop do this, i would expect them to relpace all syncros and bearings for around $5-600ish. thats just a wild guess though.

i mean, if i replace my synchros will that horrible sound be gone? i dont really wanna go whole new tranny. i just wanna fix that sound and get a new clutch. so can i just replace the syncros, clutch, oil and be good.:ermm:
yep you sure can. good luck with the syncros tho, its not like unbolting and replaing a header...
i am not mocking you i have no idea of your skill level butyou need to tak ethe input shaf and press off the one bearing and the whole gearset can slide off after that. then you take off the sycro assemblies that you want and make sure the new one goes on correctly and then repress the bearing to hold it together and then line those damn clutch forks back up. trust me theyre evil little bast@rds when it comes time for reassembly.

you might be able to score a new trans from allhyundaiisuzuparts.com. they quoted me about 600$ shipped from CA to MD, but for an m5af3. shouldnt be any difference in cost between them, if there is they're being asses.
oh i need to edit this. not new, but new for you. i would hope they only sell good parts, i dont know yet. i suppose it is possible that they give you something that shifts the same or worse than what you have now.
you can mock me! my skill level with trannies is squat~! i can tear down and rebuild my engine...but barely know enough to change my gear oil lol! i'm having my girlfriends father help me. hes a ubermechanic (2 little dots above the "u"):rambo:
ok. summary: i can just replace my clutch (also pressure plate and bearing) and the syncros and i should be in pretty good shape? uzzled:
Replacing the tranny wouldn't be that big a deal if you are already replacing the clutch. You have to take your tranny off anyhow, so you would just install the clutch and put the new tranny in where the old one was. However, changing your gear oil, maybe adding some lucas stabilizer might help get rid of your grinding.
2) Change your gear oil! Get whatever crap you have in there out, and put in Redline MT-90 synthetic that works in your car. (Mine for the 98 Tiburon was 75w90 GL4)
These 2 mods together completely removed any crunching that I had. Geeze, at least try them before you spend money on a new tranny.
