Default Hydraulic VS Solid lifter head

I am going to modify 97 Tib Fx head - from Hydraulic lifters to Solid lifters (Shimms) so that I can go much bigger on my Camshafts. Anyone ever tried this??

Not that I know of, but I don't see any real problem with it. I have heard that people who do it wind up having to re-shim it sometimes because of ticking noises. Other than that I don't know why not. The shims go underneath the valve spring before you compress the spring and put on the keeper and locks(things that hold the spring compressed and to the head). Only thing I think would be a problem would be the camshaft compressing the spring by hitting the valve stem. With the HLA's, there is a huge lifter head that is on top of the spring. Like 1.25" in diameter, smooth all the way across the top. If you change to shims, the cam would be sliding against the valve stem itself, unless something would go in-between the top of the valve stem and the cam lobes??? How large of cams are you going to put in???

Good luck with it.

^^ umm what??

the HLA's are replaced by solid tappets with a recessed top. the shims go on top of the tappet and the lobes hit the shims directly. so when it does come time to reshim, you are replacing the wear and tear item directly.

only pain in the butt thing about it is finding the correct thickness shims on a used engine. i would recommend buying the entire shim kit to do this.

I have done my 92 Golf GTI 20L 16V which was Hydraulic lifter - Now its Solid lifter and have gained quite alot inperformance - the Camshaft have been re-profiled to 300 degrees on the exhaust and 288 degrees on the intake - I have not yet need to re-shim.

I was thinking of doing the Tibby's head with cam durations of about 288 Exhaust and 276 intake..

that sounds about right for the tibby, but with solid lifters and those cams you really should be raising the redline about 1000 and porting the head for full performance. thats a lot of duration and pushing your powerband to 4000+ and a 2500 rpm powerband isnt much.

and 300/288 on a GTI holy heck thats a lot of duration, is it a street driven car? whats the redline on that sucker??

Thanks beppomarx for correcting me, I was explaining how to shim a head designed without HLA's in the first place. Thought this would apply but I was obviously wrong. What you explained makes much more sense. 300 degrees duration is insane!!!!

My 16V Golf was just finished about 4 days ago - peak power is at 7400 RPM making 173 Hp at the wheels - it has 48/50mm Bmw M3(E36) throttle bodies - I'm thinking of doing something similar with the Tibby - Hopefully I get better gains:evil:

Gee, I hope so. I'm running cams of only about 255 degrees and am making 160 whp.

Are you at the Coast/Reef - also I did one of my camshafts 276 - still have to do a piggyback chip on it.
