i know exactly what your talking about. you can actually adjust the cables so it wont hit. there are 2 long double sided nuts under the shift gate, or maybe its under the ash tray a little further back. but be careful one side is standard threads and the other is left hand threads. where do you live if your close i can help you with it  :

one time i raced a snail with my Tib. he took me off the line but once i caught traction i accidentally ran him over while attempting to pass. i won by default, but since i was obviously catching him to be able to run him over i figured that i would have won anyway.
