Default K&N Air Filter Replacement for V6

OK fans, heres a slight problem for those thinking about replacing the stock air filter with a K&N (until a company comes out with a CAI) on the V6 engine. Thinking that Hyundai would use a existing airbox for the 2.7L Sonata or Santa Fe, i looked up the K&N part numbers for them.......and guess what? Two different part numbers!! Sonata = pn 33-2188, Santa Fe = pn 33-2198......anyone know which works on the 03 Tiburon?

This is from the Hyundai parts extranet.

This is the picture with the part number for the v6 tib, http://partscatalog.hyundaidealer.co...0280028102.gif

This is the picture with the part number for the 02 v6 sonata, http://partscatalog.hyundaidealer.co...0280028102.gif

The hyundai part numbers appear to be the same #28113

This is for the 02 santa fe, http://partscatalog.hyundaidealer.co...0280028102.gif

They all appear to have the same part number at hyundai, not sure why they would have a different part number at K&N unless there are different flow characteristics for the sonate and santa fe because of the difference in vehicle type. The K&N from the old tiburon fits in with a little trimming of the rubber flange, that's what I have in now. I emailed K&N about when they would have something available specifically for the 03 tib and they have of course not replied and it's been over a week allready. Maybe if everyone sends them an email they'll get off their asses and respond!

i crossed referenced that number from Hyundai (28113) at the K&N website and what comes up doesnt help a bit...........K&N lists about 7 items for that number and none of them looks right. This sucks!!

The k&n part numbers are not the same as the hyundai part numbers, they use their own numbering designation. I was just saying for all intents and purposes that the filter appears to be the same for all three hyundai's, so theoretically either k&n would fit (sonata or santa fe) it may just be a difference in filter flow (number of pleats=total area of filter) physically I would think either one would fit since dimensionally the filter seems to be the same for all three models on the hyundai part. Give k&n a call and see if they know, they could give you the physical dimension of the filter and see if it matches the size of your stock filter.

I just bought a K&N fileter for my '03 tib and this is the number that was very close to the factory filter. the part # for the K&N is 33-2050. it was just a tiny bit smaller than the stock one and the rubber surround is a bit thicker. I just installed it about 45 mins ago and it seems the gas pedal is a little more responsive than before.

after your tib breaks in real good, you will DEFINITELY see the response go up.

which brings up the question...is it better to install a mod such as a the K&N filter before or after you've broken in the car?

I used the one from my 2.0 beta. I had to trim some top flash off but it fit Perfect.
Well now I have a spectra and the parts for my CAI just came in. But yes You can make a K&N work.

Just to be safe, I think you should probably mod it after your car has been broken in real good.
